Meet your coach

Hi, I'm Emil Nielsen.

I'm a health and exercise physiologist and a coach for inline and ice speedskating. I've spent my career helping skaters of every age get fitter, stronger, and above all faster.

I joined the coaching staff of Talent Team Denmark in 2009. If you've skated with or against a Dane in the last decade, chances are I coached them at some point, at races or on camps. I'm still part of the national team setup and train with the Danish elite whenever I'm home.

I took my first steps on long-track ice in Inzell in 2013, and that year joined the ISU-backed East Scandinavian Development Project as a student coach. Over three seasons I learned under some of the best coaches in the Nordics, and earned my long-track coaching credentials.

Since moving to Norway I've coached skaters week to week at Asker Skøyteklubb. Athletes I've worked with have won national titles and competed at the Viking Race and the Youth Olympic Winter Games.

My academic background is in return-to-play at the Norwegian School of Sport Science, one of the leading sports science institutions in the world. You may have heard of the Norwegian method in endurance sport. I'm trained in it, and in how to get you back ripping laps on your preferred surface as fast and as sustainably as possible.

Talent gets you to the start line. Coaching gets you faster.

Most skaters in the in-between years train hard with no real plan, or lean on whoever happens to volunteer. You can get fitter that way. You rarely get faster in the ways that decide races. Structured, individual coaching is the difference between just training and improving on purpose.
